Abstract

Facing units 3 for cladding the boundary surface of an earth structure 1 are bound to the structure by stabilising or reinforcing elements comprising perforated tubes inserted and held in the structure as will now be described. A hose is first inserted along the tube until the open ends coincide and water is pumped through while the tube is vibrated and subjected to longitudinal pressure. This leaches away surrounding soil to assist movement of the tube into the earth with clearance round it. Cement grout is next pump through the hose which is gradually withdrawn so that grout flows from the open end of the tube and through the perforations in bond with the soil. The other end of the tube is plugged and a facing unit passed over it and pressed against the soil through the medium of a thrust plate by a nut screwed on to the tube, this action also serving to tension the tube Alternatively a screwed sleeve may be attached to the end of a plain tube. The soil area behind the facing unit may also be grouted by a passage extending through the unit. An alternative tube is of cruciform section with fins or ridges to increase the area in contact with the earth. <IMAGE>
