Abstract

In making a photographic silver halide emulsion by mixing aqueous silver salt and halide solutions in the presence of a peptizer, a methine spectral sensitizing dye is introduced into the reaction mixture after the formation of silver halide nuclei but before silver halide grain precipitation has been completed. The emulsion can be further spectrally sensitized with dye added after silver halide precipitation has been completed. Advantages of the method can be improved emulsion speed, improved storage stability, reduced tendency for dye desorption, reduced stain, improved light absorption and the possibility of influencing grain growth to produce grains of chosen crystal habit.
