Abstract

1395539 Silver halide emulsions EASTMAN KODAK CO 19 June 1972 [17 June 1971] 28604/72 Heading G2C A primitive silver halide emulsion in which the grains are substantially free of any chemically induced sensitivity, both on the surface and internally, contains a desensitizing concentration of a spectral sensitizing dye having a cathodic half-wave potential less positive than -1.0 and an anodic half wave potential more positive than +0.4. The dye is preferably a methine or polymethine dye and may be used together with a supersensitizer, e.g. a meso substituted benzthiazole- or naphthothiazolecyanine dye (see dyes C, G and I). The silver halide is predominantly bromide and the grains are monodisperse having a grain size of 0.8Á. The emulsion gives a direct positive image when imagewise exposed to light of relatively low intensity, followed by an overall exposure to light of relatively high intensity and developed with a surface or internal silver halide developer. Alternatively a direct positive image is obtained by imagewise exposure followed by development in the presence of a fogging agent; which is incorporated in either the photographic material or the developer solution.
