Abstract

1337277 Photo-developable silver halide emulsions AGFA-GEVAERT 9 July 1971 [19 Aug 1970] 39969/70 Heading G2C A photo-developable, direct-print radiationsensitive silver halide emulsion includes molecular iodine, a silver iodide sol or a compound which releases iodide ions in aqueous medium e.g. potassium iodide: a cadmium compound e.g. cadmium bromide: and a spectrally sensitizing imidacarbocyanine dye in which at least one of the benzo-rings carries one or more substituents characterized by a Hammet constant ## of at least 0À25, nitro being excluded. Examples of such substituents are cyano, alkoxycarbonyl, fluorosulphonyl, alkylearbonyl, alkylsulphonyl, alkylsulphinyl, substituted alkylsulphonyl and alkylsulphinyl wherein the alkyl group is substituted by one or more fluorine and/or chlorine atoms, trifluoromethyl, trifluoromethoxy, trifluoromethylthio, difluoromethylthio, and preferably fluorosulphonyl or sulphamoyl of the formula wherein R 7 and R 8 each represent H, a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic group which may be substituted, or R 7 together with R 8 represent the atoms necessary to close a heterocylic ring e.g. pyrrolidine, piperidine, piperazine and morpholine. The cadmium compound is preferably inorganic and water soluble e.g. cadmium nitrate, cadmium iodide, cadmium chloride and especially cadmium bromide, but also includes organo-cadmium compounds and cadmium complexes. The emulsion may also comprise potassium thiocyanate and a halogen acceptor and may be heated prior to or during development to 80-200‹C. to increase the development speed.
