Abstract

1282084 Preparation of direct-positive silver halide emulsions E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 12 Oct 1970 [13 Oct 1969] 48430/70 Heading G2C A direct-positive photographic silver halide emulsion is prepared by (a) adding 3À33-15 millimoles of a water-soluble inorganic iodide per mole of silver halide to a redispersion in an aqueous medium of a precipitated, ripened and washed water-permeable colloid silver chlorobromide or silver bromide emulsion, and (b) adjusting the pH to 5-9 and digesting the emulsion at 43 ‹ to 66‹C. for 15 to 60 minutes, there being added during digestion of the emulsion per mole of silver halide 0À00033g to 12À0g of an amine borane as a fogging agent and after digestion is complete 10-100 mg of an optical sensitizing dye per mole of silver halide. The colloid is preferably gelatine. The amine borane may have the formula: - R 1 R 2 R 3 N: BH 3 wherein R 1 is 1-20C alkyl and R 2 and R 3 are each H or 1-20C alkyl. The sensitizing dye may be 4 (1, 3, 3-trimethylindolidinyl)-#-ethylidene-(3-methyl-1 p-sulphophenyl)-5-pyrazolone, 2-(3-ethyl-thiazolylidenyl)- #-ethylidene-3-carboxymethyl- 5-rhodanine, 4- (p-dimethylamino benzylidenyl)-3-methyl-1-psulphophenyl-5-pyrazolone, 1, 3, 3-trimethyl- 3'-ethiodide-oxacarbocyanine or 3, 3'-(2- carboxyethyl)-5, 6, 5', 6'-tetramethyl benzoxazole carbocyanine. These direct-positive emulsions have increased speed over known emulsions. Reference is made to Specifications 1, 097, 999 and 1, 076, 296.
