Abstract

1,166,074. Photo-developable photographic silver halide emulsions. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Nov. 10, 1966 [Nov. 10, 1965], No. 50429/66. Addition to 1, 059, 782. Heading G2C. Photo-developable silver halide emulsions are made wherein the silver halide grains are formed in an acid medium in the presence of an organic thioether silver halide solvent which in 0À02 molar aqueous solution at 60‹C. can dissolve more than twice the weight of silver chloride that dissolves in water at 60‹C., and in the presence of a water-soluble thiocyanate. The thioether and the thiocyanate may be added to the emulsion colloid prior to grain formation or at any time during grain formation from the precipitation to the ripening of the grains. Specified thioethers are those of Specification 1, 059,782 and those of the formulae:- where q is 1, 2 or 3, s is 1 or 2, R<2> and R' are each alkylene of 1-5 carbons and R<3> is alkyl of 1-5 carbons. Water-soluble thiocyanates are those of sodium and potassium. The silver halide grains may be precipitated in the presence of lead ions, e. g. lead nitrate, and in the presence of acid to keep the pH low, e. g. below 5. The emulsion may further contain a halogen acceptor e. g. thiourea, an optical sensitizer, e.g. a thiazoline-thiohydantoin merocyanine dye and additional water-soluble halide such as potassium iodide. Photographic materials made with the emulsions and which have been exposed and photodeveloped may be chemically developed to give records of archival quality.
