A photo-developable silver halide emulsion contains a nitrogen-containing halogen acceptor and, as an image stabilizer, an amine or quaternary ammonium compound, or a salt thereof having at least one alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, or carboxyalkyl radical attached to the nitrogen atom. Stabilizers, specified are ethylamine, diethylamine, triethylamine, tetraethylammonium hydroxide, ethylaminoethanol, diethylaminoethanol, ethylene dinitrilo tetra-acetic acid disodium salt, 1 -thiamorpholine -4-ethanol, morpholine, N-ethyl morpholine, N-methyl piperazine, N-ethyl piperidine and diethylethylenediamine. The halogen acceptor may be a hyrazine, a thiourea, a thiosemicarbazone, a urazole or a thio - or selenourazole as in Specification 1, 123, 687, or a heterocyclic mercaptan, and many of these are listed. The stabilizer may be present as 5-100 g/ mole silver halide and the halogen acceptor as 0À1-100 mole per cent of the silver halide, and 0À1-50 mole per cent of a water soluble iodine e.g. NH 4 I, CaI 2 , LiI, MgI 2 , KI or NaI may be added to the grains. The silver halide grains preferably have high internal sensitivity and may be formed in the presence of an organic thioether as in Specification 1, 059, 782, and in the presence of 0À01-5 mole per cent of a water -soluble plumbous salt, e.g. Pb (OCOCH 3 ) 2 , Pb (NO 3 ) 2 or Ph (CN) 2 , as in Specification 1, 123, 688. The emulsion may also contain a merocyanine or cyanine dye, many of which are listed. The usual binders, hardeners, coating aids, and supports for the emulsion may also be used with the emulsion. The imagewise exposed material may be photo-developed at 90-200‹ C.
