Abstract

1,025,651. Photographic silver halide emulsions. KODAK Ltd. Jan. 7,1963 [Jan. 5,1962], No. 524/62. Heading G2C. In a method of making a photographic silver halide emulsion wherein an aqueous solution of a silver salt and an aqueous halide solution are simultaneously added to an aqueous medium which contains, or has added to it during the above addition, a water-soluble thiocyanate, the concentrations of the water-soluble salts, their times of addition and the temperature of the aqueous medium are controlled so that a coarse grained emulsion having a mean grain projective area between 0. 6 and 2. 5 Á<SP>2</SP> is produced. The time of addition may be from 20-60 mins., and the concentration of the thiocyanate in the aqueous medium may be from 0. 75-7. 5 mole % of the total silver halide formed, or, if added with the halide solution, up to 20 mole % of the total silver halide formed. The aqueous medium is preferably maintained at 65-85‹C. In the examples, a solution of 39g. of silver nitrate in 200 ml. of water and a solution of 28. 6 g (or 29.1 g) of potassium bromide in 200 ml. of water are simultaneously added to 113 (or 115) ml of water containing gelatine, sulphuric acid and a small amount of KBr or NaCI at 72‹C. over a period of 40 minutes. 3g. of KCNS are present in the aqueous medium or 6 g. in the KBr solution. A water-soluble lead salt also may be added to the aqueous medium, for example by inclusion in the silver nitrate solution. A halogen acceptor such as thiosalicylic acid may be added to the emulsions after the precipitation.
