Abstract

A cylinder head (10) has, for the or each cylinder, a combustion chamber recess (11) in which are defined, preferably by separate annular inserts, an inlet port (14) and an exhaust port (15). An aperture (21) for accommodating a spark plug or fuel injector is formed in the bottom of the recess (11) and is spaced from both the inlet and exhaust ports (14, 15). A wide curved channel (22) and a narrower channel (20) both extend in the bottom of the recess (11) from the inlet port insert between the valve seat and the mouth of the inlet port. The wider curved channel (22) extends to and tapers towards the aperture (21), whilst the narrower channel (20) communicates with the exhaust port (15). Thus when the inlet port (14) is opened and closed by an inlet valve, mixture or air is respectively directed along the channels (22, 20) over a spark plug or fuel injector in the aperture (21) and over an exhaust valve in the exhaust port (15). <IMAGE>
