Abstract

To temporarily line freshly excavated surfaces of a tunnel driven by a tunnelling machine 5, a transporting frame 10 is provided which carries a number of expandable portal-like lining elements 9. The transporting frame 10 serves to move the lining elements 9 up to the heading faces and is arranged to straddle the tunnelling machine 5 such that the excavating and lining operations can be carried out without interfering with each other. To erect a lining element 9 it is first laterally expanded towards the tunnel side surfaces and then increased in height until it contacts the tunnel roof 1 and floor 2. The temporary lining is advanced by taking down the rearmost elements 9 and moving them forward for re-erection using the transporting frame 10. <IMAGE>
