Abstract

A ribbon for non-impact printing comprising an electrically conductive substrate and a transfer layer which comprises colouring material and a thermoplastic polymeric resin which has a melting point of from 40 DEG to 160 DEG C and which is soluble in a solvent which does not harm the substrate. Specified thermoplastic resins are polyamides, phenolformaldehyde resins, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers, styrene polymers and blends of polystyrene with m- butylmethacrylate or coumerone indene resins. Printing is achieved by transfer of the transfer layer onto paper by local heating of the ribbon. Electrodes may be used to provide this local heating.
