Abstract
A gray-scaled picture is divided in a TV camera into blocks each block being composed of a number of elements. The picture signal is stored in a memory 13 and is read from the memory by a coding apparatus 14. In the coding apparatus the picture information stored is processed to provide, for a block, grey scale values a0, a1, typical of the block, as well as a threshold value xt used to determine, for each block, which of the two values a0, a1, should be applied to it for coding. Each block is thus coded by transmitting the values a0, a1, and, for each element, a parameter phi i determining on which side of the threshold xt the element lies. The converted codes are stored in a buffer memory 15 from which they can be read out at a constant speed and supplied to a transmission line through a modem. <IMAGE>
