Abstract

A laminate of paper, metal and lacquer layers is formed by initially applying a coating of adhesive (5) to one surface of a layer (4) of metal formed by vacuum deposition on a layer of lacquer (3) which is carried by a moving transfer foil (1), and then pressing the adhesive surface into contact with a moving layer of paper (6) by means of a calander (11), and subsequently stripping the transfer foil from the lacquer layer. The transfer foil is highly polished and is coated with a release agent (2). The preferred metal is aluminium and the lacquer may be coloured. Both wet and dry adhesive may be employed as required and both adhesive and lacquer can be saponifiable to assist in removing the laminate from an article, e.g. a bottle, to which it is applied. <IMAGE>
