Abstract

Transfer printing sheet comprises a carrier of paper, aluminium, regenerated cellulose, terephthalic acid polyester or polyolefin foils or laminates of these, coated with (a) an opt. modified protein separation layer based on zein, (b) an acrylic resin protective layer applied to layer (a), (c) a pigmented acrylic or vinyl resin layer pref. carrying a coloured design or motif, applied to alyer (b), and (d) an adhesive layer of an org. solvent-soluble resin with a Konig Pendulum hardness of >=85 secs. (DIN 53157) applied to layer (c), such that during a transfer printing operation using the said sheet, layers (b), (c) and (d) become separated from the carrier sheet and layer (a) and the design is transferred to the receiver substrate. Used for printing bottles, films, foams, etc., and replaces prior art material based on aluminium foil alone which have insufficient mechanical strength and too high a thermal conductivity, which in some applications leads to too rapid cooling of the transfer sheet. By suitable choice of layer (d), transfer temps. of 100 degrees C can be achieved for sensitive substrates.
