Abstract
A machine for SZ stranding pulls wires 1 from fixed pay-out means 9 and feeds them to intermediate store devices 8 before passing them onto cylindrical or conical storage drums 2 rotatably mounted on a stranding tube 3, each drum 2 being drivingly connected to the tube 3 via a take-off arm 4 fixed on the tube 3 and carrying a friction coupling 5 for driving the drum 2, the wire passing from the drum 2 over pulleys 7 and 6 on the arm 4 to the interior of the tube 3. For one direction of rotation of the tube 3, the couplings 5 rotate the drums 2 so as to draw wire from the stores 8. The stranding operation pulls wire off the drums 2 and causes their speed to increase so that they take up more wire than is paid off. When the drums 2 are full the rotation of the tube 3 is reversed and this causes some wire on the drums 2 to be fed back to the stores 8 while the rest is used for stranding, and so on. <IMAGE>
