Abstract

200,528. Huck, L. C. July 10, 1922, [Convention date]. Band; blocks and shoes acting on drums; blocks and shoes.-The cam, toggle links or other means by which brake shoes or bands are actuated are arranged to be capable of a floating movement to equalize the pressure applied thereby. The clearance of the band or shoes with respect to the drum is adjusted by means of the releasing springs. Figs. 1 and 2 show an arrangement for the driving wheels of a motor vehicle in which two pairs of shoes disposed within a single drum are adapted to be separately actuated as by a hand and a foot lever. The one pair of shoes 39, 40 is pivoted at 31 to a plate 28 bolted to a flange on the axle housing and is actuated by a cam 53 ; the other pair of shoes is pivoted on the other side of the plate 28 at 32 and is actuated by a cam 67. The shoes have hardened plates 47, 48 on their ends for engagement with the cam. The spindle 54 of the cam 53 has an actuating lever 61 and is mounted in a bearing block 57 which is pivoted at 56 to the axle casing whereby the cam is free to float to equalize the pressure applied thereby to the shoes. The hole 30 in the plate 28 through which the cam spindle passes is in the form of a slot to permit the floating action. The spindle 70 of the cam 67 has an actuating lever 71 and is mounted similarly to the spindle 54. The shoes 39, 40 are disengaged from the drum by springs 76, 77 attached to the shoes at 80, 81 and to a rod 86 which passes through an eye bolt 87. This bolt normally clamps the rod 86 against seatings 90, 91 projecting from the plate 28. To adjust the clearance of the shoes with respect to the drum if this has become unequal by wear, the shoes are, applied to the drum and the clamping device for the rod 86 is first loosened to allow the tension of the springs to equalize and then tightened. Fig. 9 shows a band brake operated by a cam mounted to float as above described. The band in this case is freely mounted in the drum by the slotted member 114 on the band through which projects the pin 112 on the fixed plate 113. A stop 112<1> is provided for the ends of the band. Another form of band brake is shown in which the band is anchored against rotation at its middle point. Fig. 7 shows a pair of shoes actuated by toggle links 98 connected by a link 97 to an arm on a shaft 95.
