Abstract

486,239. Brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. March 25, 1937, No. 8785. Convention date, March 30, 1936. [Class 103 (i)] A vehicle brake comprises a pair of shoes, each formed with a rim portion 16, carrying a friction facing 18 cooperating with a drum 10, and a stiffening web 14, the shoes being connected at one end by adjustment means 20, while, at the unconnected ends, the rims 16 extend beyond the ends of the webs 14 and have welded thereto reinforcing plates 30 between which is arranged an anchor member 24, which is secured to the backing plate 12 and which takes the braking torque directly from one or the other plate 30, depending on the direction of rotation. The brake-applying means comprises a hydraulic cylinder 26, integral with the member 24 and housing pistons 28 which are slotted to embrace the end of the webs 14. Auxiliary mechanical means comprises a pair of links 32, 34, slotted at their outer ends to embrace the webs 14 and linked by an operating lever 36 extending through an opening in the plate 12. This opening is sealed by a plate 40 carried by the lever 36 and held against the plate 12 by a leaf spring 38. In a modification, the link 34 is dispensed with, the lever 36 having a rounded end seated in a slot in the adjacent web 14.
