Abstract

18,318. Waeyenbergh, L. van. Aug. 12. Acting on flat sides of drums; force - transmitting mechanism.-A brake for railway vehicles comprises a pair of blocks pressed against the opposite flat sides of a drum secured to the axle, by means of an arrangement of equalizing-levers connected to the brake cylinder by other levers having adjustable fulcra for carrying the braking-force in accordance with the load on the vehicle. Fig. 1 shows one form, in which a pair of blocks 8 are pressed against opposite sides of a drum 1, 2 by means of levers 12, which are pivoted at one end to a rod 14 sliding in a bracket 15 secured to the vehicle, and are connected at the other end by links 16 to a T-shaped lever 18, the third arm of which is connected by a rod 19 to a lever 22, which has an adjustable fulcrum 25 and is operated by the brake cylinder 20. In a modification. the brake blocks 7, 8, Fig. 7, are operated by levers 41, 42, both ends of which are mounted to slide in relation to the vehicle, and are connected to triangular levers 48 as shown, the levers 48 being connected by rods 49, 51 to a lever 50, which is connected to the lever 22 described above. In the actual arrangement shown in Fig. 7, there are two brakes mounted, one in each wheel, on the same axle, the two levers 50 being connected to the lever 22 by links 54, lever 55, and rod 56. Energy-absorbing elements.-The brake drum may consist of halves 1, 2, Fig. 1, provided with central flanges which are bolted together within the drum, the bolts being manipulated through peripheral openings 5. These openings also serve to maintain the brake cool. In the form shown in Fig. 5, adapted to be fitted within the vehicle wheel, the drum comprises two halves 34, 35 connected together by bolts 40 and screws 39. Regulating brake pressure.-The braking- force is varied in accordance with the load on the vehicle (1) automatically by the radial movement of the brake blocks 7, 8 due to their connexion by brackets 15, Fig. 1, or 47, Fig. 7, to the vehicle, whereby they are made to work at varying effective radii on the faces of the brake drum, and (2) non-automatically by adjustment of the pivots 25 of the levers 22 in slots 24 by means of screws 27 and nuts 26.
