Abstract

The system comprises a regulatable fuel injection pump 2, a fuel injection valve 9 including a valve needle 12 biased by a spring 13 into its valve- closing position. The spring and one end of the needle are housed in a chamber 14 of the valve. In order to accelerate valve closure after each injection and to prevent fuel from dribbling, the spring-biased end of the needle is arranged to operate as a hydraulic piston intermittently acted upon by pressure of fuel delivered to this end by another fuel pump 4 connected to the injection pump 2 via a timing device 3 regulating the intermittent operation of the other pump 4 in such a way that it will deliver the fuel at a variable interval after the fuel delivery by the pump. The additional closing pressure thus exerted on the valve needle will slowly be reduced again by letting the fuel used for this purpose leak through a pressure-reducing passage 20 in a leak-fuel duct 19 back into a fuel reservoir 7. <IMAGE>
