Abstract

A pencil has a lead-gripping collet (16) which tapers externally towards the writing end (3), the collet being held captive between axially spaced fixed abutments (18, 20) whilst a locking sleeve (11), coupled with an operating member (30), and normally urged by a spring (25) away from the writing end (3) into wedging engagement over the collet (16) with the latter located by its rearward abutment (20), is movable manually, by the operating member (30), against the spring (25) to advance the lead until the collet (16) engages the other abutment (18) and thus opens. The collet (16) is lightly entrained by friction in the sleeve even when, open. Because the points at which the collet grips and releases the lead are well defined, the lead is advanced by a predetermined amount at each stroke of the operating member. <IMAGE>
