Abstract

Compound or articulated road vehicles.-In - six-wheeled vehicles in which the front end of a two-wheeled trailer is mounted on a turntable carried on springs pivoted to the rear axle of the tractor, tilting movements of the turntable about the axle are limited by means such as links and stops which limit the upward movement of one end of the turntable and the downward movement of the other. The apparatus is intended mainly to prevent overturning or undue tilting of the trailer body or load due to sudden acceleration when the tractor and trailer make a substantial angle with one another. The turntable 10 which supports the trailer is connected by springs 8 to trunnion blocks 9 mounted upon the rear axle of the tractor. The frame 4 of the tractor is independently mounted upon the axle by springs 5. Upward movement of the front end of the turntable is limited by ties 15 comprising flexible loops of wire, rope &c. arranged between brackets 16 on the turntable and the spring brackets 17 on the tractor. The corresponding downward movement of the rear end of the turntable is limited by stops 22 which engage the tractor frame 4. Tilting in the opposite direction is similarly limited by ties 18 and stops 21. Shafts may also be provided between the axle and the underside of the tractor frame 4.
