Abstract

Compound or articulated road vehicles.-In sixwheeled vehicles in which the front end of a twowheeled trailer is mounted on a turntable connected by a transverse axis to the rear end of the tractor, rigid or resilient torque members restrict or confine within certain limits the tilting movements of the turntable about the axis. The apparatus is intended mainly to prevent overturning or undue tilting of the trailer body or load due to sudden acceleration when the tractor and trailer make a substantial angle with one another. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the turntable 1 which supports the trailer, is connected by springs 2, to trunnion blocks 3 mounted upon the rear axle of the tractor. The frame 10 of the tractor is independently mounted upon the axle by springs. To limit the tilting movement in either direction about the axle the free ends of one or more torque members 5 secured to the trunnion blocks 3 engage between leaf springs 7, 8, the ends of which are anchored to the tractor frame. In addition to the torque members, stops 15, 16 carried by the turntable are adapted to engage the tractor frame 10 and prevent excessive tilting movement. In a modification, the centre of a semi-elliptic spring is secured to the turntable and the ends engage stops on the tractor frame.
