Abstract

199,020. Grafenberg, L. June 7, 1922, [Convention date]. Electrodes.-Active material containing cadmium for the negative electrodes of galvanic batteries is prepared by the electrolysis of a solution containing a complex cadmium ammonia salt such as cadmium ammonia sulphate. Other metals such as nickel and copper which form complex ammonia salts may be deposited with the cadmium by the addition of the said salts to the electrolytic bath. The anodes in the electrolytic bath may consist of cadmium or nickelcadmium alloy, the cathodes being of nickel, iron, &c. The spongy metal which is deposited is washed and dried at about 100‹ C. whereby the cadmium is partly oxidised. If the electrolytic bath contains a sufficient quantity of free ammonia, cadmium hydrate is formed at the anode. This may be used as active material either alone or mixed with the cathode sponge.
