Abstract
198,759. Gray, A. G. March 6, 1922. Blocks acting on drums.-To check or control the slueing of a ship's derrick, guy ropes are led one to either side of the derrick and coiled around pulleys which, under the action of springs, counter-weights or the equivalent, keep both guy ropes taut, and the movement of the pulleys is controlled by brakes which are applied or released simultaneously. In a spring-actuated sheave with brake mechanism, the sheave f is connected to the fixed spindle h by a coiled spring i, and a brake block k normally held off by springs r may be applied by turning a cam-shaft o. When the sheave-blocks are at opposite sides of the derrick the two brake-mechanisms are controlled by a single lever near the winch. The two guy ropes may be led round guide-pulleys to coaxial sheaves controlled by cams on a single shaft o. In either arrangement the brakes may be normally off and may be applied to stop slueing, or the brakes may be normally on and released to permit slueing. The invention is more particularly applicable to derricks of the type described in Specification 178,964, [Class 78 (iv), Loading &c.].
