Abstract
197,119. Howard, J., and Downing, I. March 9, 1922. Pipes.-Pipe fittings &c. are made by simultaneously advancing tools in different directions on a metal blank of the required mass arranged in a die with a lateral recess or recesses into which the metal flows. A block a of heated metal is placed in a divided die b<1> and operated on by three punches c<1>. Either the die or the punches must have shoulders d to determine the ends of the branches. The holes may be completed by the punches c<1> or other tools, before removing from the die b<1> or by drilling afterwards or, if a cross is required, the uncompleted forging is reheated, placed in a die b<2>, Fig. 6, and then operated on by a punch c<2> and punches c<3> having concave ends. For bends a die b', Fig. 9, and punches c<4>, c<5>, c<6> are employed.
