Abstract
197,080. Conradi, H. Feb. 21, 1922. Butt joints.- The plain or flangeless ends of concrete or like pipes A, B, are joined by forcing a jointing ring C of rubber or like resilient material by means of a plain clamping-band or a band such as D, Figs. 1 and 3, tightened around its circumference, into the circular groove 3 formed by the bevelled meeting ends of the pipes. The pipes are packed around with earth, spaces being left to complete the joint, or other means are provided to prevent longitudinal separation of the pipes while being joined. The inclined or bevelled ends 1<a>, 2a of the pipes may be angular, corrugated, or curved, and the packing-ring C approximates in section to the shape of the groove and may be built up of connected sections. The ring C is of greater depth than the groove 3, and, when the clamping-band is tightened, it is pressed outwards to overhang and bear against the ends of the pipes. The clamping-band may be provided with inwardly projecting flanges at its edges to protect the packing-ring C, and the space F may be filled with cement for the same purpose. The resiliency of the packing-ring C permits it to adjust itself to irregularities on the pipe ends as well as permitting a slight deviation of the pipe line from the straight. The metal parts may be galvanized. The clamping-band D may be provided with a continuous or interrupted web D, as shown in Fig. 1, which is compressed, when the band is tightened, into a recess formed in the periphery of the packing-ring C. The band is provided with lugs D<6>, which are drawn together by a bolt D<4> and nut D<5>, and the space between them is bridged by a part D<8> integral with or separate from the band D. The bolt D<4> may be riveted or otherwise secured to the band. An alternative form of band is shown in Fig. 5, in which the lugs D' and bridge D<10> are integral with the band, and a removable split-ring held in recessed lugs D<12> in the band, takes the place of the web D<1>.
