Clutch wrenches with chuck-like grip.- In wrenches of the iris diaphragm type wherein a plurality of jaws pivotally mounted on a carrying plate are closed simultaneously on to a nut by relative rotational movement of the jaw carrying plate and the spanner body, the spanner body is formed with an inwardly extending flange and the jaws are slotted at the back to engage this flange. The jaws 20 are formed with pivot pins 21 mounted in annular plates 11 which have abutting flanges 12 secured together bv screws 13. The ring shaped body 10 situated between the jaw-carrying plates and 'engaging slots in the backs of the jaws is adapted for limited rotation relatively to the plates by means of slots 14, such rotation of the body 10 causing cams 25 on the inside of the body to engage cams 24 on the jaws 20 and move them inwards. The plates 11 have lugs 15 between which the handle 17 is pivoted at 16, the handle terminating in a toothed segment 19 engaging teeth 18 on the body 10. If desired, the jaws may be provided with pins 26 engaging cam slots 27 in the body for the purpose of opening the jaws when the handle is swung in the appropriate direction. In the modification shown in Figs. 6, 8 and 10, the pivoted jaws 31 are carried by plates 32 on either side of a flange 29 on the body 28, the flange 29 having lugs 34 between which the pivot pins 33 of the jaws are loosely located. The backs of the jaws are formed with cam notches 36 engaging pins 30 on the body. In addition to the handle 37 on the body an auxiliary handle 38 is provided for moving the plates 32 to close the jaws.
