.ANDREVJ P. THOENGREN, Ol-i PIGEOII COVE, MASSACHUSETTS.
1 WRENCH.
Application filed May 14, 1923. Serial No. 638,975.
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW P. THORNJ CHEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pigeon Cove, in the county of Esand State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Virenches, of which the following is a speci fication.
This invention relates to a pipe wrench, the general object of the invention being to provide means for adjusting the movable jaw so that it can be made to tit a large number of different sizes of objects with means for firmly holding the movable jaw in adjusted position to prevent slipping of the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide graduations on the parts so that the movable jaw can be readily set to make the wrench lit an object of known size.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying" drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation 01"" the wrench.
Figure 2 is an edge view.
Figure 8 is a view with parts broken away.
Figure 4 is a similar view with the movable jaw moved outwardly so that it ca. be adjusted.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 55 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is an elevation of a shank and rigid jaw of the invention.
In these views 1 indicate the stationary jaw which is formed integral with the handle The movable jaw is shown at The extremity of the stationary jaw is fOllIQt, as at 4 to receive the shank of the movable jaw and the inner edge 01' said shank is provided with teeth 5 for engaging the teeth 6 on alock plate 7 which is connected with the shank of the stationary jaw l by means of the bolt- 8. The handle portion 2 is provided with an outstanding ear 9 adapted to be disposed between the spaced ears 9 on the lock plate 7 and the bolt 8 is passed through the perforated ears 9 and the elongated opening 9 in the ear 9 whereby the lock plate will have a certain amount of movement and the inner edge of said plate is slightly beveled to provide for rockmovement on the bolt. A par of side plates 1.0 are connected to the lock plate by means of the bolt 8 and the pins 11 and these side plates are provided with extensions 12 through which a pin passes tor holding a cam member l l between them This cam member is adapted to engage a flat spring 15 which also engages the outer edge of the shank of the movable jaw and the cam member is provided with a handle 16 for adjusting the same. he siank oi the movable jaw is provided with graduations 1? and one of the side plates is prvided with a mark 18 whereby the movable jaw can be set to make the wrench fit an object of known size. By swinging the cam member outwardly the shank of the movable jaw is permitted to be separated from the lock plate so that it can be adjusted in relation to the stationary jaw. After the adjustment is made the cam is moved inwardly so as to push the shank of the movable jaw into engagement with the lock plate to hold it in adjusted position. The elongated hole 9 for the bolt 8 serves to keep the jaws of the wrench parallel at all times which means a firmer grip on the object.
it is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope oi the appended claim.
l hat I claim is A wrench comprising a handle, a rigid jaw termed thereon and extending laterally ther from, an adjustable jaw arranged in opposed relation to the laterally extending j aw and formed with a tooth shank extending parallel to the handle, a locking plate arranged between the handle and shank and having teeth adapted to engage the teeth on the latter, plates arranged upon opposite sides of the handle and projecting beyond the shank of the movable jaw, an ear on the handle having an elongated opening, perforated ears on opposite sides of the lociing plate straddling the car on the handle,
a pivot bolt through said ears for pivotally above the shank of the movable jaw and a connecting the locking plate to the handle, fastening device carried by the last menthe inner edge of said locking plate being tioned ears and adapted to hold the shank of 10 beveled to provide for rocking movement of the adjustable jaw in an adjusted position. the same relative to the handle and a pair of In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
spaced parallel ears carried by the plates and projecting an appreciable distance ANDREl/V P. THORNGREN.
