Abstract
The ripening of alkali cellulose is rendered more rapid and uniform by heating the mass, with agitation, to 50-60 DEG C. for a few hours, say, 2-8 hours. Conveniently, the mass is heated in a rotary drum provided with a jacket or worm through which air or water at a temperature of 50-60 DEG C. is passed; and on completion of the ripening and before conversion into viscose, the mass is cooled by passing cold water through the jacket or worm, or by sprinkling the exterior of the drum with cold water. By the more rapid and uniform ripening, a greater yield of artificial silk is obtained from the resulting viscose solution.
