Abstract

In the manufacture of artificial silk from viscose, a small percentage of caramel or caramel-containing materials are added to the viscose or to the coagulating-bath or to both. The material used may be caramel containing waste products obtained in the manufacture of sugar, or molasses which has been more or less caramelized by heating to a temperature above 100 DEG C., for example, to 150-200 DEG C. Using an acid-salt coagulating-bath, the filaments show a brownish tint and a quiet gloss or lustre.
