Abstract

194,107. Holt, F. B., Miller, L., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. Feb. 8, 1922. Magnetic separators.-A magnetic separator for extracting magnetic particles from oil or other liquid comprises a plurality of magnets arranged in spiral formation transversely of the path of the oil through the separator. Magnetic separators of this type are preferably arranged within the strainers of a non-magnetic oil strainer such as that described in Specification 146,647, [Class 46, Filtering &c.]. The magnetic separator 12 comprises a plurality of magnets 13 spirally arranged on a vertical rod 14 in a strainer 10 of the non-magnetic oil strainer 5. Cylindrical packing pieces 15 arranged between the magnets prevent the oil from passing through the centre of the strainer and cause the oil to flow in sinuous paths in contact with the poles of the magnets. When the oil is caused to flow through the non-magnetic oil strainer before it passes through the magnetic separator a primary magnetic separator of any suitable form may be arranged before the non-magnetic oil strainer to separate out the major portion of the magnetic particles and any such particles which may be carried past both the primary magnetic separator and the non-magnetic oil strainer will be extracted by the magnetic separator 12. The primary magnetic separator 20 may comprise an electromagnet 21 between the poles of which are arranged a number of steel or iron plates 24.
