Abstract

175,345. Chapman, E. B. Oct. 14, 1920. Magnetic separators.-Strainers are made of a metal that is permanently magnetized or can be magnetized electrically. Fig. 1 shows apparatus for straining oil comprising cylindrical elements 1, 2, connected to polar members 5, 6, carried by a non-magnetizable cover 7 and protruding therethrough to receive energizing coils 8. The elements 1, 2 can thus be magnetized with opposite polarity. The oil passes through the casing from the inlet 3 to the outlet 4. Fig. 6 shows apparatus with flat strainer plates through which the liquid flows as indicated by the arrows. The apparatus shown in Fig. 7 has additional separate polar members 18 adapted to collect magnetizable matter in a manner analogous to that of the apparatus described in Specification 150,101. The members 18 may be arranged around a central member which is shorter than the others.
