Butt joints.-A metal sealing or packing-ring 16, substantially cylindrical in the normal condition and of such a cross-section as to beam radial distortion at its ends, is engaged in axially - extending recesses 14, 15 in the adjacent faces of flanges 7. 8 on the ends of the pipes 5, 6 to be coupled. The ring is bowed outwards as shown, when the flanges are drawn together by the bolts 10, by a sliding contact between the outer surface of the ring at its ends and the inner coned portions 15a of the recesses 14, 15. The flanges engage each other at their radially inner portions, but are spaced apart at those portions through which the bolts pass, so that when the joint is fullv tightened, the pipes themselves take the compressive strains and no strain occurs on the packing-ring 16, which is of less breadth than the distance between the ends of the recesses. Fluid pressure may be admitted in the known manner within the ring to tighten the joint.
