Abstract
192,722. Smith, F. H., and Nowak, A. K. Aug. 10, 1921. Hopper-and-plunger machines; strain, preventing.-Relates to briquette presses, particularly for scrap metal turnings &c., of the type in which a plunger and mould are reciprocated in alignment, and consists in providing a yielding connection, for example an hydraulic cushion, between the mould and its actuating-means. As shewn, a plunger 4, Fig. 5 reciprocates within a hopper I in alignment with a mould 6 moving over an abutment block 5. A crank 7 imparts movement to the plunger 4 through crossheads 9. 17 and an interposed, hydraulic link 14; and to the mould, through the crosshead 9, slides 20, links 22, levers 21, links 24, and crossheads 25, 31 with interposed hydraulic links 28. The mould moves for the greater part of its stroke in a direction opposite to that of the plunger, but the links 22 are so dimensioned that a slight reverse movement is imparted to the mould at the end of the forward stroke, so that, upon the return stroke of the mould, the briquette is dislodged by impact against the block 5. A predetermined pressure is maintained by connecting the links 14, 28 through pipes 15, 29, Fig. 3, to cylinders 33, 34 38, 39 working in an air cylinder 37.
