Turning.-In a lathe having selectivelyoperated sliding and surfacing motions a splined worm shaft a actuates a worm wheel c on a sleeve carrying a pinion d which may be operated from a handle g working in a gate h to engage the sliding or the surfacing trains. The worm wheel and pinion are mounted in a housing f having a projection 4 which when either feed is engaged rests on one of the ledges 6, 7 in a spring-pressed block k mounted on a shaft m. To disengage the feed the shaft in may be rocked to withdraw the block from the projection 4 either manually by means of a handle p or automatically through toothed quadrants v, v' actuated by the contact of a moving part of the machine with a projection w.
