Abstract

17,957. Royce, F. H., and Rolle-Royce, Ltd. Dec. 23. Boring curved cylinders ; attachments for boring; milling.-The work, which in the example shown is a valve bend for an internal-combustion engine, is first plain-bored from each end from the solid with a stepped hole, and is then finish-bored by means of a spherical cutter. A milling-machine, having a special series of tables, is employed. The work is held in a jig on a rotary table d on a sliding table c'. Fig. 1 shows the initial setting. The table c<1> is fed in to a stop to bore the initial straight portion, and then the table d is rotated to bore as much as possible of the curved portion. After retraction of the cutter, the ways of the table c<1> are then set over, as limited by bolts and slots b<2>, to the position shown in Fig. 4, the machine table x is traversed, and the tables c', d are adjusted to position the work and cutter as shown. Further rotation of the table d then completes the boring.
