The invention relates to improvements in lathes and has reference more particularly to a novel construction including a cross slide and a plurality of individual slides, the latter slides being adjustably mounted for movement upon actuation of the cross slide.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved construction adapted for mounting upon the bed of a lathe, including a cross slide and individual slides, and wherein the latter slides will function as supports for the cutting tools and will be adjustable in relation to the cross slide and also in relation to the work piece.
A. further object is to provide a construction adapted for mounting upon the supporting slide of a lathe, including a plurality of individual slides having longitudinal movement, and actuated by hydraulic means upon actuation of a cross slide.
A further object is to provide a support for supporting cutting tools, which will present the tools in different angular relation to the work piece and wherein the angular relation may be varied within certain limits.
Still another object is to provide a construction of the class described, which will be comparatively simple in structure employing the minimum number of parts, practical and cheap to manufacture and yet positive and reliable in operation.
With these and various other objects in view, the invention may consist of certain novel features of construction and operation, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the specification, drawings and claims appended hereto.

flhe present invention is preferably applied to a lathe of the hydraulic type an embodiment of which is enclosed in applicants copending application, Serial No. 352,427, filed April 4th, 1929, wherein a lathe bed 2 is provided with ways 33 upon which is mounted, so as to have reciprocating motion thereon, a supporting slide 4. The slide is reciprocated upon the ways by means of a hydraulic pressure operated piston 5, op crating within a cylinder (3, which has com municating therewith pressure fiuid supply pipe 7 and 8. The piston is in turn connected to a connecting rod 9, which is secured by means of a bracket 10 as shown to the slide 4. By pressure medium being admitted into the cylinder on either side of the piston, the slide is caused to present the various cutting tools into position and retract them therefrom. This reciprocating movement of the slide 4 allows the tools to be presented and retracted only in a direction parallel with. I
the ways 33, which necessarily limits the adaptability of the machine to a restricted character of work. The structure of the present invention allows for the cutting tools to be presented in accordance with the movement of the supporting slide and to' have an additional transverse movement across the face of the work piece whenever the character of work in the lathe requires it. This is especially advantageous as it adapts the machine for use in cutting gear blanks and other similar objects, the various cutting operations being formed simultaneously.
Upon the slide 4 is bolted or otherwise secured a base member 11, which has its upper surface shaped as shown in Figure 2. Upon this base member is mounted so as to have movement thereon, a cross slide 12 provided with a dove-tail recess which fits upon and secures the slide to the upper surface of the base member. This cross slide 12 has a transverse movement upon the supporting slide, that is, a movement at right angles to the movement imparted to the slide 4 by the pressure cylinder 6. The actuating mechanism takes the form of an auxiliary pressure cylinder 13, bolted upon the slide 4 as shown and provided with pressure supplg pipes 14 and 15 at each end respectively. a
piston 16 is fitted within the cylinder and has a piston rod 17 in connect on therewith. For varying the travel of the p ston a wall 18 of the cylinder is prov1de d with an ad usting screw 19 against WhlCl'l the p1ston, 1n one direction of its movement, has abutting engagement. By means of the threaded end 20 of the piston rod 17, the rod is threaded into and thus secured to the cross slide 12.
The end of the slide adjacent the cylinder 13 is formed with a portion 21 having an upper surface 22 as shown in igure 4. An individual slide 23 provided with a dove-tall recess fits upon the surface 22 and is adapted to have movement upon portion 21. As a means of regulating this movement of the slide 23, a rectangular base member 24 is secured to the slide 4 and has pivotally mounted thereon a rectangular guiding member 25, provided with a groove 26. The guiding member is pivotally secured by means of a pivot pin 27, so that the member has a limited rotation upon the base 24. By adjustment of the bolts 28,the gu1d1ng member may be securely clamped 1n the position desired. The individual slide 23 is formed with a pointed end 29 having a bearing 30. By means of this bearing and a pin 31, the slide 23 is secured to a block 32 adapted to slide within the groove 26. The block is firmly held within the groove, but has suflicient looseness to allow for movement therein. Adjustment of the block can be made by the wedge member 33.
It is therefore seen that by reason of the transverse movement given to the slide 12, the individual slide 23 is given a diagonal movement which can be regulated by the ad ustment of the guiding member 25. The slide 23 is of course provided with means for holding a cutting tool 34, which comprlses a supporting block 35 adjustably bolted 1n place by bolts 36. The tool is given a dlagonal movement to agree with the particular adjustment given to the guiding block and is therefore employed in facing of those parts of a work piece, such as for example, the beveled face of a gear blank.
It is desirable since the quantity of work put out by a lathe can be materially increased, to have the lathe fitted so as to perform several cutting operations simultaneously. For this purpose the present invention contemplates a second slide designated 37, which has interfittin engagement within a recess 38 and there ore movement upon the diagonally disposed bridging member 39, as shown in Figure 4. A tool supporting block 40 is mounted upon the slide and has adjustably clamped in position a plurality of cutting tools 41. The bridging member 39 is dia onall disposed over the slide 12'and has a3 justa 1e securing engagement upon the supporting slide 4. .This construction is embodied in the end portion 42, having the openings 43 and bolts 44. When the bolts are loosened the adjusting screws 45 can be regulated so as to locate the member in the position desired in relation to pin 46 against which the screws engage. The bolts 44 are then tightened and the bridging member thus clamped in position.
For causing the movement of the slide 37 upon themember 39 which presents the tools 41 into position and retracts them when the cutting is completed, the slide 12 has secured thereon by means of dowel pins as shown in Figure 3 two guide blocks 47 and 48, thus forming a guide-way 50 upon the slide. The slide 37 has depending therefrom so as to be located within the guide-way, a stud 51. By the movement of the slide 12 imparted thereto by the cylinder 13, the stud 51 is caused to have a limited shifting movement, which is determined by the peculiar shape given the guideway 50. As a result slide 37 has a movement upon the bridging member-in the direction of that member.
In operation of the lathe equipped with the structure of the present invention, the chuck 52 after having the Work piece secured therein is rotated by power means located on the head-stock comprising an electric motor 53. The operator of the lathe by controlling the admission of the pressure fluid into the cylinder can locate the slide 4 in correct position adjacent the chuck. Also by a suitable control of the pressure fluid entering the cylinder 13, the cross slide 12 is drawn into its extreme right hand position as viewed in Figure 3. With the supporting slide then looked in position fluid pressure is allowed to enter the supply pipe 15, forcing the piston 16 and the slide 12 to the left. This movement of the slide gives to the cutting tool 34 a diagonal movement, which will be parallel to the groove 26 in the guiding block 25. The tools 41 are forced from an outward position into their extreme inward position as shown in Figure 3, when of course, the piston has reached the limit of its travel towards the left. It is thus seen that this construction allows for a number of cutting operations to be performed simultaneously, while also permitting an adjustment of the tools to adapt the lathe to various types of work.
It is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited by the exact embodiment ofthe device shown, which is merely by way of illustration and not limitation, as various and other forms of the device will of course be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, in combination with a supporting slide, of a cross slide mounted for movement thereon,
an individual slide adapted to have movement upon said cross slide upon movement of the latter, a bridging member disposed over said cross slide, a second individual slide mounted thereon, and means operatively associating the second slide with the cross slide to cause movement thereof upon actuation of said cross slide.
2. In a device of the character described, in combination with a supporting slide, of a 16 cross slide mounted for movement thereon,
an individual slide adapted to have movement upon said cross slide, a bridging member disposed over said cross slide, a second individual slide mounted thereon, and means 20 associated with said individual slides and with said supporting slide to cause movement of the individual slides upon actuation olfjlsaid cross slide, said means being adjust- 3. In a device of the character described, in combination with a supporting slide, of a cross slide mounted for movement thereon, an individual slide mounted for movement upon and transverse to said cross slide, a guiding member adjustably secured upon said supporting slide and positioned angularly with respect to the cross'slide, a block adapted to slide in said guiding member, securing means connecting said block to said individual slide, whereby movement of said cross slide causes movement of said individual slide transverse thereto.
4. In a device of the character described, in combination with a supporting slide, of a cross slide mounted thereon, an individual slide mounted for movement upon said cross slide, a bridging member disposed over said cross slide, a second individual slide mounted on said bridging member, means depending from said second slide and associated with the cross slide, and other means mounted on the supporting slide and associated with the first individual slide for the purposes described.
y 5. In a device of the character described,
in combination with a cross slide, of an individual slide carried thereby and having movement thereon, a bridging member disposed over said cross slide, a second individual slide mounted for movement on said member, and means causing movement of said second slide upon actuation of said cross slide, said means comprising a stud depending from said second slide, and a diagonal guideway formed on the cross slide and associated with the stud.
6. In a device of the character described, in combination with a supporting member, of a cross slide mounted thereon, means forming part of the support extending over the cross slide transversely thereto, an individual slide having movement on the supporting means and being operatively connected with the cross slide, a second individual slide carried by the cross slide and having movement transversely thereto, and operative connections from the second slide to the supporting member, whereby actuation of the cross slide'causes movement of the individual slides.
7. In a device of the character described, in combination with a supporting member, of a cross slide mounted thereon, a bridging member disposed over the cross slide and secured to the support, an individual slide mounted for movement on said bridging member, a stud depending from said slide, means on the cross slide having engagement with the stud whereby actuation of the cross slide causes movement of the indiviual slide, a second individual slide mounted for movement on the cross slide, and means operatively connecting the second slide with the support sothat actuation of the cross slide also imparts movement to the second slide.
