Selective punching machines.-In a machine for making a distance record-sheet for controlling automatically the operations of a metal-punching machine, the sheet x is punched or otherwise marked and at the same time printed or impressed with numerical values corresponding to the perforations &c. The punches 7 are arranged preferably in staggered relation in three rows, and the die-plate 5 is correspondingly apertured. The punches are reciprocable in apertures in a plate 9, between which and the plate 5 the sheet x is fed intermittently and are loosely mounted in apertures in a reciprocable carrier 10. The heads 14 of the punches are adapted to be engaged by gags 16, slidably mounted in recesses 15 in the carrier 10, so that only those punches that are so engaged are forced through the strip x when the carrier moves forward, the others receding into the recesses. The punches corresponding to each distance value to be punched in the strip x are selected by means of keys 1, which control the circuits of solenoids 24 operatively connected to the gags. The carrier 10 is reciprocated by eccentrics on a shaft provided with a one-revolution clutch, which is controlled by a solenoid in a circuit containing contacts 60. These contacts are closed by a piece 61 on a lever 62 of the number-printing mechanism after the punches and numbers have been selected on the keyboards. An additional keyboard for making perforations without numerical values may be used. To prevent error, two keyboards in circuit with each other may be used so that simultaneous and identical settings of the keys in the two boards are required to complete the circuit for the perforating of the sheet and the printing of the numbers.
