Abstract

218,669. British Tabulating Machine Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Braitmayer, O, E.). July 5, 1923, [Convention date]. Selective perforating machines.-A machine for punching holes representing consecutive numbers, with a row of punches, a common reciprocating punch actuator, and a plurality of selectors one to each punch movable singly to select the punches, has an operative connection between the punch-operating member and the selectors whereby a different selector is automatically brought into engagement with a punch at each of a series of punching operations. The machine is described as an attachment to a record-card printing press. The attachment as a whole is slidably adjustable on side rails 10 of the press for the purpose of varying at will the position of the punch mechanism, for instance, in relation to the columns of a record card. The supports for the attachment include a bottom plate 11, a top plate 12, and a die-plate 13, a clearance, being allowed for the passage of card stock 14. Brackets 15 carried by the top plate 12 support cross shafts 16, 17 which pass through slots in the side plates 18 of the attachment. The punches 23 are guided in openings in the top plate 12 and in a plate 24, and are provided with collars 25 which are engaged by restoring bars 26 carried by the. plates 18. The punch bed is adjustable longitudinally of the guides by a rack and pinion 20, 21. Selector levers 28 are pivotally mounted on shafts 27 supported by the plates 18 and are provided with upstanding lugs 29 disposed above which are selector shafts 30. Pins 31 are arranged spirally on the shafts 30 which may be turned bv hand knobs 41 for setting up any desired number thereon or for zeroizing. Number dials 42 on the shafts 30 indicate the setting of the shafts. The plates 18 are depressed to cause the selected pins 31 to actuate the punches by means of linkage 35, 36 connected to the mechanism of the printing press, such linkage acting through eccentries 33 on the shafts 16, the straps of the eccentrics being connected to the plates 18 by pivoted arms 34. The eccentrics are rocked counterclockwise to depress the plates and the right-hand or units shaft 30 is fitted with a ratchet wheel which by means of a ratchet pawl and lever 37 is advanced one step on the return to normal of the linkage 35, 36. Suitable transfer mechanism is fitted between the shafts 30 for the denominations and the. selecting pins are thus advanced automatically to select consecutive numbers. Clutches operated from a button 44 disconnect the transfer mechanisms while zeroizing or setting any particular combination. Interchangeable slides 49 carrying particular sets of selecting pins 51 can be inserted in slots in the side plates 18 for gang punching. Specification 202,894 is referred to.
