LOUIS A. HAWTHORNE, OF NEVVABK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO STEEL UTILITIES, INCORPORATED, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 25, 1917.
Application filed. November 17, 1914. Serial No. 872,593.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS A. HAWTHORNE, a citizen of the United States,-residing at Newark, New Jersey, have made certain Improvements in Machines for Making Distance-Record Sheets for Metal-Working Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to machines for making distance record devices for metal punching machines, and more particularly to machines for making an automatically operating distance record device, such as a perforated strip or sheet, which constitutes a permanent distance record device, and is adapted to automatically control the successive relative positionings of the work and the punching mechanism, as by controlling the travel and stopping or positioning of the shape or like'work through the machine and relatively to the punching mechanism, and to imprint upon the distance record device in addition to the marks cognizable by the machine a corresponding record in numerals or characters indicating the value or distance of the various-perforations or like marks cognizable by the machine. These and other objects of the invention will be set forth hereinafter in part, and in part will be obvious here-from.
The invention consists in the novel parts,
construction, arrangements, combinations and improvements herein shown and described.
The accompanying drawings referred to herein, and constituting a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, and with the description, serve to explain the principles of the invention.
Of the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a machine constructed in accordance with the principles of the invention;
Fig. :2 is a top plan corresponding to'Fig. 1 but showing the casing at the left hand end removed;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical section, on an enlarged scale on the line A-B of Fig. 2, and also of Fig. 5, showing the punches and the selecting and actuating mechanism therefor;
Fig. l is a transverse horizontal section a. the line o n of Fig. 3
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary elevation looking at Fig. 3 from the right;
Fig. 6 is a view corresponding to the upper part of Fig. 3 but showing certain punches selected or operated and another punch'inoperative and the parts in position after the perforations have been made;
Figs. 7 and 7 are enlarged fragmentary vlews showing the punching and printing mechanism for perforating and imprinting the strip;
Fig. 8 shows a portion of the distance record strip with the perforations and the corresponding numbers printed thereon;
Fig. 9 is a diagrammatic View of the punch selecting and punch operating circuits; and
Fig. 10 is a similar view to Fig. 9, but showing two cooperating or error prevent- 111%k6Yb03I'ClS.
eferring by way of example to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention, means are provided for selectively setting the punches, or other means for making the distance indications, preliminary to the actual making of such indications, and in cooperation therewith means for imprinting upon the distance record sheet the numbers or numerical value of the perforations, or like marks as recognized by the punching machine. In accordance with certain features of the invention, the distance between. successive groups of perforations in the distance record sheet (each such group constituting a reading or position for the work relatively to the punching machine), is independent of the extent or length of the corresponding distance of feed or advancement of the work in the punching machine. In connection with, and in a contiguous position relative to, the group of perforations, numbers are printed upon the distance record sheet whereby the value or distance of feed of the work for each group of perforations may be read visually from the perforated sheet.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 1, and to the embodied form of means for selecting or setting the desired punches or like strip marking devices and also for selecting or setting the printing or impressing devices for the corresponding numbers or numerals punches, and a gang or multiple punch, ar
ranged one after the other in tandem along the pathway of the work. The particular punching mechanism to be called into action may be determined by a controlling-perforation-or other mark in the distance record sheet, or by various groups of perforations, located at dili'erent parts across the sheet, such arrangement being immaterial so far as 'concerns many features of the invention.
The particular punch to be used may be indicated in the printed record by a letter or symbol in connection with the number indicating the distance value, as W 3 6'7, might stand for a'distance of three feet, six inches, the perforations to be made in the web of the beam If desired a plurality of printing mechanisms may be arranged side by side, each adapted to print at a given part across the distance record sheet 50. Such an arrangement is shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Se far as concerns many features of the invention, the numerals could'be printed with a designating letter or character along with the distance denominations and magnitudes, and the web punch and flange punch numerals could be printed in'a single column.
The embodied form of punch and numeral selecting means comprises keys 1, which keys in addition to making the proper selections in the perforating and printing mechanisms, also may constitute a part of or be connected to an adding machine mechanism which is adapted to record and add distance denominations and values, and to imprint the successively selected distances and the sum or total thereof. In the illustrated embodiment only the printing and perforating mechanisms are illustrated in detail in connection with the keys.
Means are provided for selecting and actuatingthe perforating devices, and in the embodied form the punches are arranged in staggered relation in three banks so as to condense and simplify the mechanism, and produces a distance record strip of less width than where the punches are in a single line. It will be understood that with the embodied form, such staggered group of perforations will constitute a single reading or distance feed for the punching machine. A die plate 5 is provided with corresponding staggered rows of die apertures 6. The strip or card 00 which is to constitute the distance record device is fed along intermittently by suitable mechanism between successive actuations of the punching mechanism between the die plate and the punches.
The punches 7 arereciprocable' in apertures 8, in a plate 9, which plate 9 is spaced away from the die plate 5 sufliciently to permit the feed of the strip or card as therebe tween. The plate 9 thus serves to keep the strip or card close to the plate 5 and assists in its smooth running through the machine. The punches 7 are mounted loosely in a3er tures in asliding carrier 10, said carrier 10 being slidably supported upon a plate 11, conveniently carried by the machine frame. The carrier 10 may also have tongue and groove connection 12 with side frames 13, to
keep it in proper position as it reciprocates to and fro. The heads 14 of the punches 7 are located in recesses 15 within the carrier 10. 1
In the recesses 15 are gags or interponents 16 adapted to pass into actuating and nonactuating conditions with reference tothe corresponding punch heads 14:. The gags 16 are recessed at their tops to receive the punch'heads. At one side of the recess the top parts of the gags are bifurcated (at the right in Figs. 3 and 6). The projections 17 on either side of the bifurcation straddle the punch just beneath or back of the head, thereby preserving the gag and punch in alineinent. The portion of the gags on the opposite side of the recesses 18'from the bifurcated members 17 have beveled faces 19 therein extending back to projections 20, which are horizontally in line with the head of the punch. Thus when a gag is moved vertically (in Figs. 3 and 4) into the operative or engaging position, the inclined face 19 will move the head l l of the punch into the bottom of the recess 18. Thus when the carriage 10 is moved forward each punch held in the bottom of the recess 18 will be forced through the sheet :20, while the punches whose gags have not been moved upwardly will slide back idly in the'upper wide part of the unset or unselected gags and will not perforate "the paper.
Suitable selecting and actuating means for the punches are provided, and in accordance with certain features of the invention said means are electrically operated.
As embodied, the lower ends 22 of the gags 16 are grooved longitudinally of the direction of travel of the punch carrier 10. In the supporting and guiding plate 11 are provided apertures in which are reciprocably mounted rods 23, the upper ends of which project into the groove 22 of the corresponding gags 16. The respective rods 23 are connected to the cores of acorre-' sponding series of solenoids 24. The solenoids 24 are shown in three rows and two ation of the selected or set punches 7 to perforate the distance record sheet m. and as embodied the central part of shaft is eccentric with respect to its bearing portions 36 and 37, said bearings parts being journaled on the machine frame. Mounted upon the shaft or crank are two links 38 and 39, held in place by collars '41 and 40. Said links 38 and 39 have their other ends carried pivotally upon pins 43 mounted in lugs-44 and 45, which lugsa're fixed to carrier 10. The link 38 is likewise pivotally carried by a pin. 46, said pin being mounted between lugs 47 and 48 which lugs are also fixed to the carrier 10.
Means are provided coiiperatmg with the mechanism" just described for intermittently actuating the punch carrier 10 subsequently to a complete setting or selection of a group, the punches 7 of which represent a feed or distance value for the travel of the shape in the punching machine. The embodied form thereof comprises means operable j ointlyor simultaneously with the means for imprinting the numerical value corresponding to the setting of thepunches. In said embodied form there are comprised a clutch member 50. rotating with andv slid:
able along the extension of the shaft 37, shown at the upper part of Fig. 2. Said clutch member cooperates with a clutch member 51 fiXedto a gear wheel 52, which gear wheel is mounted upon said extension of the shaft 37 but1is free to rotate thereon. The clutch member 50 is impelled into engagement with .clutch member 51 by spring 52, but is restrained from engagement therewith'by slidable pin 53, the end of which pin projects into a cam groove 54 in the periphery of the clutch member. The pin .53 is reciprocably mounted in a support 55, and is normally urged by spring 56 into the cam groove 54.
Attached to pin 53 is the core of a solenoid 58. The solenoid 58 is in a circuit 59, said circuit including a pair of contacts 60, closed by a bridge piece 61 upon the lever 62 ofthe number printing mechanism. Thus when the lever 62 is swung downwardly to cause the machine toperforate and to print upon the stripor card a the pin 53'is retracted from the cam groove 54. The clutch member 50 moves into engagement with clutch member 51, and by rotation of shaft 35, 36, 37 the punch carrier 10 is moved from'the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 6 thereby perforating the strip or card m, and on the return movement ofcarrier 10 the punches are withdrawn.
The pin 53 upon being released is again projected into the cam groove 54, and when it encounters the incline 57 it moves .the clutch member 50 out of engagement with clutch member 51, and the punch actuating 'mechanism is brought to rest after a single actuation. .The gear wheel is driven continuously in a suitable manner, as by a. pinion 63 fixed on a shaft 64. Said shaft 64 has a belt pulley 65 driven by a belt 66 from a motor 67. The entire group of selected punches and numeral types representing a complete distance reading or value .are simultaneously impressed on the distance record sheet as by the operator at his option.
The sheet 00 receives an intermittent feed or forwarding movement between successive operations of the punching devices. The embodied form of means for. effecting this comprises two traveling endless bands or bolts 75, having projections 76 adapted to enter corresponding holes in the sides of the sheet 00. The bands or belts pass respectively over pulleys 77 and 78 at either side of the machine. The pulleys 77 are both fast upon a shaft 7 9, journaled upon the machine frame. Fixed to shaft 79 is a ratchet wheel. 80. Engaging with ratchet wheel 80 is a pawl 81, eccentrically pivoted on a crank disk 82, on the end of shaft 36. Thus at each revolution of shaft 36, 37 there is an actuation of thesclected punches and a forward. feed of the sheet 00 properly timed with respect to each other.
The various key boards for punching and working strip or sheet to be used in operating web, flange, and gang punches are indicated by reference numerals 70, 71 and 72.
Means are provided by certain features of the invention for impressing or perforating in the card or strip cc various perforations relating to the functions, actions and operations of the punching machine in addition to the distance values which are both perforated and imprinted upon the strip or sheet 00. In the embodied form therefor there is provided an additional keyboard 175, the keys 176 of which control circuits which select punches but do not actuate or effect numerical distance values and which are not printed on the sheet or card The embodied form of printing means comprises series of types representing distance denominations and values or magnitudes, and as embodied, the numeral bearing types corresponding to the selected punches are simultaneously selected, and the numeral impressions and the perforations are made simultaneously and at the will of the operator.
In said embodied form, a plurality of independently positionable numeral bearing plates 90 are carried respectively upon arms 9l,wl1ich arms are pivotally mounted at 92. In each of the arcuate plates 90 are a series of longitudinally slidable pins 93,
' each bearing at its front end a numeral or numerals, said pins being held in retracted position by springs 94. provided between the respective arms 91 and the corresponding series of keys 1, whereby the different keys of the series variously position the plate 90. to present the numeral corresponding to the key at printing position. Said connections comprise pivoted rods 95, pivotally connected to the arm 91,
and having a lost motion, pin and "slot convalues, they at the same time select or set the corresponding numeral bearing types indicating the distance denominations and values corresponding to the particular punches so selected or set.
In -the embodied form, means are provided for simultaneously printing upon the sheet w, contiguous to the perforations, allthe numerals pertaining to a particular distance reading or setting at the same time asthe perforations therefor are made in-the sheet a" by the punches. A series of hammers 100 are mounted, respectively, upon arms 101, which arms are pivotally mounted at 102, and are acted on by a series of springs 103. Pivotally connected to each arm 101 is a bar 104:. Said bars 104 are provided at their ends with detent hooks 105, which hooks engage stops 106, thus holding the hammers in retracted position against the tension of their respective springs 108. Formed on eacho-f the bars 104 is a lug 107, and also on each of said bars is mounted a pivotedlatch 108, said latches being constructed to give in one direction but being rigid in the other direction. Springs 112 hold bars 104 in operative position;
Upon a shaft 109, fixed to arm62, is a short arm 110. v
The manner of operation of said mechanism is substantially as follows The hammers being in retracted position, and the selected numeral bearing pins or types having been set at printing position Connections are by the actuation of the proper keys, the op- (to the right in Fig."
62 causes arms 110 to engage the correspondmg lugs 10% and to draw the hammers 100 backwardly from the positionshown in Fig. 7 to thatshown in Fig. 7 the hooks 105 engaging again the stops 106. At the same time thetops 111 of die hammers engage the underside of the arms 91 and'restore the type segments 90 to position for a new setting, at the same time restoring the depressed"'keys 5.
When the'leveri62is moved in the opposite direction, the arms 11'0 engage pivoted latches ting the arms "11 0 to passback to the position shownin Fig. 7 preparatory for the next succeeding actuation.
In Fig. 8 of the drawings is shown onetype. or form of distance record sheet hav ingbeen perforated by the machine and the corresponding distance values, also having been printed thereon by "the machine. In this form of distance record sheet, there is one group of perforations for the flange punch, and another group of perforations for the web punch, and a group fora gang punch, and the distance denominations or values are imprinted in'corresponding columns, marked and ident'fied, upon the distance record sheet as. 1 v
In said form of distance record sheet, the
sheet is provided with linear major coordinations indicatingthe. location ofthe distance denominations. -The sheet is also marked with-minorv linear longitudinal coordinations to indicate numerical values in the distance denominations and the location of perforations for the difi'erent numerical values in the various distance deno'minations. Some of. the perforat ons are 1nd1-' catedby Major transverse c'o'ordinations are provided to divide successive distance readings or settings from each other, or to occularly indicate them. For further conv'enien'ce in reading or consulting the distance record sheet, thenumerals for'each distance denomination may be printed upon the sheet at various points, preferably co'n ti'guous to the corresponding perforations, as foundconvenlent and desirable.
matic showing is made of an arrangement 108 which now roekfreely permit- Feed holes 2 are provided which cooperate withthe feeding devices as hereinbefore de-' whereby two different operators must co operate togetheron two duplicate keyboards to make the various settings of punching mechanism and printing mechanism before the actual punching of, and printing upon, the record sheet can be effected, the corresponding keys of the keyboards and the hand levers 62 and 62 being in series in the circuit. The duplicate parts are indicated by the same reference numerals With the addition of the exponent a. his will be understood from the diagram, and is generally similar to the arrangement of copending application, Serial No. 821,990, filed March The manner of operation of the machine has been. fully explained in connection With the description of the various groups of mechanism, and need not be repeated.
The invention in its broader aspects is not limited to the particular. mechanism shown and described, nor to any particular mechanism, but changes may be made therein Within the scope of the accompanying claims, Without departing from the principles of the intention and Without sacrificing its chief advantages.
