Selective perforating-machines.-A machine for perforating statistical cards, of the type in which the punch-elements are selectively set from a keyboard, and the holes are punched simultaneously, has a traversing keyboard with a smaller number of rows of keys than there are rows of punches, the whole series of punch-elements being set in zones consecutively. Punches 3 guided in plates 1, 2 are blocked by setting levers 8 to perforate a card K on a die plate 4 raised by cams 6 on a shaft 5. A keyboard 21 slides on rails 13, 14 under the action of a spring and escapement mechanism 40 and carries keys 20 actuating through push-bowdens 18 the setting- levers 8. The latter are notched and held in depressed position by locking-plates 9. After a zone of punch-elements is set, depression of a shift-key 25 rotates a boss 27, with tappet 28, splined to a shaft 29 carrying a tappet 31 set at an angle to the tappet 28, to remove the latter from an adjustable stop 23 and allow the carriage to be moved until the tappet 31 engages a second stop 23. On release of the key 25 the carriage reaches its position over the next zone of setting levers. A buffer-spring 30 is mounted on the shaft 29 to check data set on the keyboard, the wires 32 within the push bowdens 18 terminate in locking-cones 35, engaged by locking-bars 36 to hold actuated keys in depressed position. The cones 35 are freed by the actuation of the shiftkey 25.
