Merely as illustrative, but with no intent to unduly limit the type of arrangement of the record forms there are here shown record forms adapted for the returned goods and refund department of a merchandise establishment. The forms illustrated includes several spaces a-a to receive written description of the merchandise returned and the reasons therefor, the name and address of the customer to who-m refund is made and by whom returned, the monetary value of the goods, and other identifying entries. Additional thereto there are provided across the tol ofthe form a series of appropriately designated spaces b-b to receive therein punch marks indicative of the character of the transactions, such thereof are presented in registering and aligned relation on the writing tablet by operation of the pin wheels 4.
Stripjeeding and autographic feature The pin wheels are intermittently actuated through sufiicient range to advance the record strips one form length at each operation by an electric motor H with which they are connected by a speed reduction gear train. The motor operation is initiated by a solenoid l2 upon manual depression of a starting button l3 and is operative through a predetermined cycle at the end of which it is automatically arrested. Such one cycle motor operation is quite well-known in the power operated autographic register art. Obviously, the apparatus may be manually actuated by a crank handle, or by a treadle or other device, and frictional or other strip feeding means Some type of traveling pin feed device isdesirable, although not essential, in'order that the corresponding formson superposed strips may be accurately registered and aligned in the recording position.
The writing tablet 8 is overlaid by a cabinet lid or cover, having therein an access opening l3, through which the positioned portions of the record strips are accessible to receive record inscriptions. The record strips are transversely interleaved in recording position with strips of transfer material. The transfer strips are auto-,-

matically advanced from a supply roll M at one side of the Writing tablet 8 by intermeshing knurled rollers at the opposite side thereof, between which the ends of the transfer strips are gripped and which are progressively advanced through succeeding partial rotations by the feeding operation of the record strips.
The transfer material advancing devices are best shown in Figs. 9 and 10. A detent pawl 22 holds the ratchet wheel and transfer material feed rollers 25 in their advanced positions.
While a set of the superposed record forms Ill are in inscription receiving position over the writing tablet 8 and beneath the opening [3' in the cabinet lid, the forward ends of the positioned forms are immediately beneath a group of depressible punch elements 23, of which there is one in registry with each transaction recording space b of the forms, and also one in registry with each of the value spaces 0 thereof. Thus, the punches are arranged in threebanks comprising one transaction punch bank and two banks of value punches.
I After receiving inscribed record matter in the Punch mechanism The group of punches 23 are supported for vertical reciprocatory movement in a mounting bar 21 which, bridges the forward portion of the. recording position in elevated spaced relation above the level of the writing tablet and the path of travel of the record strips. The punches are provided with enlarged heads at their tops and reduced perforating or cuttin extremities at their lower ends. The several punches are provided with individual helical retracting springs 28. Beneath the group of punches and flush with the writing tablet 8 is a die plate 29 having therein a plurality of die openings 30 with each of which one of the punches 231s aligned. The die plate is positioned substantially coincident with the pin Wheels 4 which project above the level thereof into engagement with the recordstrips, while the punches 23 and die holes 30 in the plate are positioned somewhat forwardly of the pin wheels, as shown in Fig. 4.
Overlying the record strips above the die plate 25: is a stripper plate (H, which is carried by a pair of swinging arms 32 and is yieldingly held in depressed position by helical springs 33 coin cident with the pivotal connections of the stripper plate arms 32. Upon subsequent depression of the actuator. plate by swinging movement of an operator lever 42, all of the selectively positioned coupler plungers are simultaneously depressed to simultaneously de- -v pressthe corresponding punches into perforating engagement with the portions of .thestrips then in recording position. [The operator lever 42 is pivoted for swinging motion and is formed with a projecting foot 43, which by such swinging motion is thrust throughan opening 44 in the top of the register cabinet into engagement with the depressible actuator plate 35 to effect operative depression of the plungers.

To unlock the selector bar for such movement by, disengagement of the looking detent 41-from the shoulder 48 of the bar, there is provided upon the top of the key guide key stems 53 project. There is a separate detent or latch plate for each bankof keys. The latch plates'51 are spring tensioned. Each plate may be provided with an individual retracting spring,
but in the present instance a helical spring cable 58 is employed, which is commonto the slides of the several banks of keys. The retractile spring cable 58 is attached at itsopposite ends to the housing partition or guide plates 49.. In-
termediate its ends it is formed into a succession of reverse bights which are alternately engaged about projections 59 upon the housing partition or guide plate 49 and about like projections 60 upon the separately movable latch plates 51.. The construction is such that either of the latch plates may be moved longitudinally. by the depression of any key of thecorresponding bank, and upon locking engagement with the depressed key. the key stem 53 is formed a divergent cam tongue Bl, which upon depression of the key stem through the corresponding hole in the latch plate 51 serves to slidingly move the latch plate longitudinally against the tension of the spring 58. As the latch plate 51 is so moved, a dependent finger or flange B3 on the end of the latch plate engages with a shoulder 64 of the selec'torbar detent 41, to elevate the detent out of engagement with the shoulder 48 of the selector bar, as shown in Fig. 8, thereby permitting the spring 46 to retract the selector bar until arrested by engagement of the corresponding shoulder 45 with the depressed key. As the cam tongue 6| passes beyond the latch plate 51 and the spring 58 retracts the latch plate, the cam tongue 6| engages therebeneath to lock thekey in its depressed position.

During such return motion of the operating lever, a cam nose H thereon engages a stud 12 projecting from a rock arm 13 connected to a rocking bar 14 which extends across the several latch plates 51. Each of the latch plates has an upturned finger or flange 15 engaged by the rock bar upon oscillation thereof to operate the latch plates against the tension of their retracting spring 58 sufliciently to release any selector keys 4! which then may be held in depressed position by engagement of their cam tongues Bl beneath the latch plate. The operating lever is retracted by a coil spring 16 about its pivotal mounting. With restoration of the selector bars and release of the depressed keys by retraction of the latch plates incident to the retraction pf the operating lever by the spring 16, the parts are returned to normal relation preparatory to the next operation.
Immediately above the cam tongues 6| upon the key stems 53 are shoulders M which prevent retraction of the latch plates 51 through full stroke under influence of the spring 58 and so retains engagement of the operated latch plate with the locking detent 41 to prevent its reengagement with the shoulder 48 of the selector bar until the keyboard is cleared and all keys returned to normal. 7
From the above description it will be apparent that there is thus provided a device of the character described possessing the particular features and construction herein disclosed comprise the preferred form of several modes of putting the invention into effect, and the invention is there'- fore claimed in any of its forms or modifications within the legitimate and valid scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, we claim;
1. A recording apparatus, wherein record indicia are identified by punch marks in appropriate spaces of a printed form, presented in rec- 0rd receiving position by strip feeding and regis tering devices engageable with superposed continuous record strips of series connected detach able record forms, having thereon appropriate spaces for entry of inscribed recordsand contiguous thereto a plurality of appropriately designated punch receiving spaces for progressively advancing the record strips through successive form length movements and arresting the successive record forms with the appropriately designated punch receiving areas of superposed forms in registry with each other and with the corresponding punches, including a plurality of independently operative punch members, one for each of the designated punch receiving paces of the form, a common actuator therefor, punch selective mechanism including a plurality of reciprocatory selector bars. coupling devices each common to a plurality of punch members carried by the respective selector bars and movable into operative relation with a selected punch of the plurality by movement of the corresponding selector bar to enable operative movement of the punch by actuation of the common actuator, said coupling devices being movable relative to and independently of the selector bars under influence of the common actuator to operatively actuate the corresponding selected punch, a series of setting keys pertaining to each selector bar determining the degree of movement thereof necessary to present the punch coupler in operative relation with the corresponding punch, a detent device for locking each of the selector bars in retracted position against their actuating influence and disengaged'byoperation of any one of the setting key pertaining to the particular bar, and an operator device for transmitting longitudinal selective movement to the selector bars actuator to thrust selected punches through the strips in registry with each other and with a series of punches engageable therein, including a plurality of independently operable punch members disposed in rows in relation to the po-.

"A recording apparatus for operatio'nlupon a continuous strip of series connecteddetachable. preprinted'forms; each having an' area apprepri: ated to inscription of record data and between sucharea and the head of the form aseries of defined punch receiving area appropriated respectively to transaction identification and to momentary values wherein the strip is progressively advanced by stripfeedingdevices past an inscription receiving and punch receiving =posi-' tion, a writing tablet, over which the strip is ad vanced, punches one for each of the transactionidentification and monetary value identification punch receivingareas positioned closely in advance of the writing tablet in the'directionyof advance- ,ment of the strip, and beneath which the strip is advanced, strip arresting means for accurately registering the inscription receiving area of the strip with the writing tablet and the respective transaction and monetary identifying areas in registry with the correspondingipunches ofsaid group at the limit of each strip feeding, opera- 1 t on, a series oi transaction identification keys and of monetary value keys, selective means for conditioning punches correspondingto manually operated transaction identification and monetary a group of independently operable forms are progressively advanced past a recording position, including an inscribing position and a multiple punching position arranged in aligned relation in the direction of advancement of the strip, a group of independently operable punches at the latter position, strip arresting means for accurately registering a preprinted area of the strip in inscribing position and simultaneously registering each of the areas appropriated to transaction identification, and monetary value identification with a corresponding punch, a set of manually operable keys each bearing a difierent transaction designation, and a set of keys each bearing a different monetary value designation, selector means for preconditioning transaction indicating punches and value indicating punches corresponding to corresponding keys upon operation of the keys, preparatory to simultaneous operation thereof by a common actuator.

A recording apparatus for recording upon a continuous strip of series connected detachable preprinted forms the charatcer of a business transaction, data pertaining thereto and the monetary value involved in the transaction, wherein a record trip is progressively advanced by strip feeding devices through a, step by step movement and periodically arrested in record positionover which the forms are successively arrested to receive a written inscription, a group of punches disposed contiguous to the writing tablet, appropriated respectively to identification of the character of difierent transactions and dif-' ferent monetary values with'which prescribed areas of the arrested form appropriated to like transaction and value indicia register when the form is in record receiving position, a group of punch selection keys, including a set of transaction keys appropriated to indication of particular transactions, including Charge, C. O. 'D., Merchandise Creditf and Cash, and a set of keys appropriated to different monetary values, operative connection controlled by operation of said keys for preconditioning the corresponding punches for operation upon an arrested form, and actuating means for effecting operation of the conditioned punches corresponding to the selected keys to engage the arrested form in'the correspondingly appropriated spaces thereof.

A recording apparatus for recording indicia upon a continuous strip of series connected detachable preprinted forms, each having a space thereon appropriated to reception ofhand writ: ten data, and having at the head of such form a series of spaces appropriated to indication of particular business transactions and a further series of spaces appropriated to indication of monetary values, including a writing tablet over which the strip is progressively advanced through step by step movement by strip feeding devices and arrested in record receiving position with the space appropriated to hand written data in of keys designated for different business transactions and a set of keys designated for different monetary values corresponding to the spaces of the form appropriated to business transaction" and monetary value indicia, operative connections between the respective keys and the corresponding punches, and means for actuating the selected punches to indicate in the appropriate spaces of the form the character of the transaction and the monetary value thereof.
