Apparatus for simultaneously perforating a plurality of index positions adjacent an edge of a record-card and for notching out said perforations comprises a plurality of punches operable in one operation thereof to perforate a card adjacent an edge thereof and in another operation to effect notching of the card, and means for selectively rendering the punches effective for notching. As shown in Fig. 10 a record card is punched so as to provide a row of perforations 177 which serve as index positions, further perforations then being punched in appropriate positions so as to represent data. A " lifting " or " handling " hole 176, which is not notched, is also punched. The machine is provided with banks of keys 21 of which one bank is shown in Fig. 3, four interponents 102 and punches 43 associated with each bank corresponding to the four index positions 7, 4, 2 and 1, Fig. 10, and being selected through cranks 25 by four slides 22 which are positioned by the keys 21. A locking-key 173 serves to hold the depressed key and associated punches in position for repeated operations on successive cards and a release key 175 is provided to release all depressed keys including the locking key. In operation a card is placed in a slot 47 to a depth determined by a member 153, all cranks 25 and interposers 102 being made operative by a transverse bar 149 which raises the cranks as shown in Fig. 3, so that upon initiation of a punching operation by a separate key, not shown, the complete punching-head is moved in a clockwise direction about pivot 19 so as to perforate index holes in the card. The bar 149 is then lowered so that only the keyoperated cranks and interposers remain operative and at the same time the member 153 is raised to position 'the card for notching, which is effected by a second movement of the punch head. On completion of this second movement the driving means, not shown, is disconnected from the mechanism and all keys and slides, with the exception of those held by previous depression of the locking key, return to normal.
