Abstract

15,587. Worth & Sons, T. B., and Davis, A. Nov. 4. Tufted fabrics.-In the weaving of tufted fabrics in which the tufts are formed around wefts and all the wefts are inserted simultaneously by two needles in two sheds, one or more horizontally slidable weft-retainers are employed at the selvedge-shuttle side of the loom, with or without similar retainers at the other side, and a weft-placer at each side or on the shuttle side only is used to form a space for the insertion of the tuft yarn, whether it be for a two, three, or four shot weave and whether the loops of the tufts extend to the back of the fabric or not, the same two-shed shedding-motion being employed in each case. In the weaving operation, all the wefts in one shedding-cycle are inserted simultaneously into the two sheds, and the unretained portion of the wefts is then advanced towards the fell, the tuft ends being inserted in front of the retained portion, which consists of either the top weft or wefts, the bottom weft or wefts, or a portion of either or both of these, the retained portion of weft being then released and moved forwards and the tuft ends doubled up behind it. As an example, the arrangement of placers P, F and a retainer R, shown in Fig. 2, is suitable for weaving a three-shot fabric comprising single top wefts T<1>, T<2>, Fig. 7, bottom wefts B<1>, B<2>, tuft yarns Y, dead warps D, and active warps L. In this case, both wefts B<1>, B<2> in the bottom shed and a portion T<2> of the weft in the top shed are moved forwards to the fell of the fabric by the placers P, F, the tufts Y being inserted in the space thus formed and being doubled up around the portion T<1> of the upper weft, which is retained by the retainer R. For a four-shot weave, Fig. 10, the placer F is dispensed with, since the bottom weft is divided as well as the top weft. The placer P on the shuttle side is modified so as to advance half the bottom weft, and an additional retainer R is employed for retaining the unmoved portion.
