Dynamometers, rotaryabsorption. - In hydraulic, electric, or other rotary-absorption dynamometers, gearing is interposed between the shaft of the primemover and that of the rotary member of the dynamometer, so that where the power of the prime-mover is developed at a low speed, a rotor of comparatively high speed but of small dimensions may be employed. The gearing is arranged within the stator casing so that its frictional resistance is transmitted to the registering-device. The invention is shown as applied to an ordinary hydraulic dynamometer of the Froude type, the rotor shaft B being driven through gearing e, E from a shaft D connected by a coupling D' to the shaft of the prime-mover. The shaft D is provided with roller bearings d within an extension C' of the casing C, oscillation of which about the axis of the shaft D is restrained by the usual weighted lever &c., and a shaft D<2> working in roller bearings d' is provided in a second extension C<2> of the casing C. The part e<1> containing the gearing may serve as an oil bath. Helical or chain gearing may be employed; or the shafts B, D may be co-axial, and the power transmitted through epicyclic gearing.
