Abstract

162,750. Bowden, A. F. Jan. 30, 1920. Current motors; driving and transmission mechanism.-A water-wheel to be driven by tidal currents is mounted so as to rise and fall with the tide, and is provided with means for converting its alternating rotary motion into uni-directional motion. A water-wheel of the undershot type comprises a water-tight drum a fitted with radial vanes b; the wheel is mounted on sway-beams d which are loaded at the other end so that the wheel rises and falls with the tidal stream flowing through the race f. Motion is conveyed from the wheel by a chain k to a sprocket-wheel h having the same axis as the sway-beams d. A second motion shaft m at right-angles to the first is driven in a constant direction through free-wheel couplings, the members r of which are fast or splined on the shaft m, and the coacting members p are secured to bevel-wheels n rotating freely on the shaft and driven by a bevel-wheel o on the sprocket-wheel h. A fly-wheel may be interposed between the second motion shaft and any machinery driven thereby, and may be geared up to rotate at a greater speed.
