Abstract

6962. Visser, A., Goede, J. H. de, and Veen, J. de. March 21. Driving and transmission mechanism, special applications of.-In an arrangement for driving a dynamo by water currents, means are provided for automatically obtaining a unidirectional drive from tidal or other waters flowing in opposite directions. A. paddle-wheel a is mounted on springs on two boats k united by cross-beams, and it drives through a gear train c, f a fly-wheel i, from which the dynamo l is driven bv a belt. In the case of water currents of alternating direction, the gear shown in Fig. 4 is interposed between the fly-wheel and the dynamo. A rocking arm m, having a submerged paddle at its lower end, controls a slide q, which carries two shafts s, t geared together by chain-wheels u, u<1> and carrying friction wheels w, w<1>, respectively, adapted to engage the inner or outer surface of a wheel x, according to the position of the slide as controlled by the paddle and tide. A pulley v on the shaft t is connected by a belt to the fly-wheel i, Fig. 1, and the dynamo is connected by a belt to a pulley on the shaft z of the wheel x. Reversal of the water current thus reverses the rotation of the paddle-wheel and throws over the slide; thereby maintaining the rotation of the shaft z and the dynamo in the same direction.
