SAMUEL L. STRIBLING, OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS.
WAVE-MOTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
1 Application filed May 1, 1912. Serial No. 694,355.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL L. STRIBLING, a citizen of the.United States, residing at San Antonio, Fort Sam Houston, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, haye invented new and useful Improvements in VVave-Motors, of which the following is a.
specification.
This invention relates to wave motors and has for an object to provide a device of th1s character for the generation of power by the utilization of the lifting power of the waves and tides of the moving surface of a body of water.
Another ob ect of the invention is to pro-1 vide apparatus of this character which will be comparatively inexpensive and which will include substantially a battery of float- With a view to securely anchorin the motor apparatus upon the beds of rivers,
estuaries, lakes, seas, bays, sounds,
gulfs.
and oceans; I provide a plurality of Mentic-ally constructed iles, 1 which are arranged at required mtervals relatively and provided with ballast containers or receptacles 2. .These receptacles are open at their upper ends while the lower ends are closed by bottoms 3. Collars 4 upon the piles are connectedwith the bottoms3 of the ballast receptacles by means of suitable cables 5. A suitable ballast,6 in each container efi'ectually spends its force to securely hold the container against the beds of rivers, estuaries, lakes, seas, bays, sounds, gulfs and oceans, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings whereby the companion piles 1 will be securely maintained in proper positions.
Bearings 7 upon the upper ends of the piles l are disposed in the same general plane with each other so as to revolubly support a power-transmitting shaft 8. Ratchet wheels 9 are secured to the powertransmitting shaft to be operated through the medium of a battery of floats to be hereinafter explained. Rocking levers 10 havebifurcated portions 11 whose arms'12 receive the shaft 8 therethrough whereby the levers are free for adjustments upon the shaft asto the rise and fall of the floats.
Dogs 13 are pivoted between the arms of Patented Feb. 4, 1913. I
each bifurcated portion 11 and under the influence'of springs 14 the dogs are yieldingly held'associated with the toothed surfaces of the ratchet wheels so as to efi'ect the required rotation of the shaft on the rise of the floats. The floats 15 have brackets 16 thereon whose ears 17 are pivoted as at 18- to similar ears 19 of yokes 20. These yokes are provided with intermediate ears 21 to which the lower ends of the levers 10 are pivotally connected whereby the floats are adapted for substantially universal movements. I
From the construction of the motor described it is evident that the battery of floats as arranged and described permits the shaft to revolve on the proper successive rise of each float and. in this manner the shaft is kept in continuous motion. Power taken from the waves and tides as described herein may be. transmitted to any power machinery such as a dynamo or the like not shown. The cost of installation of the apparatus is comparatively small with a like.-
wise cost of maintenance of the-apparatus and from practice is found admirably adapted for the purpose intended.
1. A water motor including 'a batter? of rivers and other bodies of water subject to tides and waves, and provided with ballast containers adapted to be supported upon the beds of rivers and other bodies of water subject to tides and waves, alining bearings carried by the piles, a driven shaft revolubly mounted in the bearings and means adapted to be actuated by the waves to revolve said shaft.
2. In a'wave and tide motor, companion piles having alining bearings, a driven shaft piles adapted to bedriven into the be s of journaled in the bearings, arms mounted Z for rocking movements on the shaft, ratchet wheels secured to the shaft, floats mounted for rocking movements on the arms, and
means on the arms having clniving' contact Wheels, fleets, ears on the floats, yohes pivet- 1e Wrth ratchet Wheels so as to lmpart m0t10n ed to the ears, and plvotel conneetlons he to theshaft on the rise of the floats. tween the levers and the yokes.
3. A Wave and tide motor comprising In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 5 battery of piles having alining bearings, a in presence of two witnesses.
shaft journaled in the bearings and having SAMUEL L. STRELBLXNG. fixed ratchet Wheels thereon, arms mounteel' Witnesses: for rocking movements on the shaft and Mrs. SYLVESTER J0me,
having yieldahle dogs engaging the ratchet J. V. BROWN.
