Abstract
1214. Ripson, J. D., and Whitehead, W. G. Jan. 15. Current motors; driving and transmission mechanism, special application of; regulating.- A water-wheel adapted to be erected upon the bank of a stream is mounted upon a pivoted plate, so that, when horizontal, the buckets are held out of the stream, but when tilted up, one side of the wheel is immersed in the stream. The buckets 43, Figs. 1 and 2, are secured to arms 42 pivoted at 41, Fig. 1, to a plate 28, revolubly mounted upon a fixed shaft 24 and bearing upon a base-plate 18 to which is secured the shaft 24. The plate 28 is provided with teeth 29 which engage a bevel-wheel 10 situated within a housing 9. Power is taken from the wheel 10 by means of a bevel-wheel 60 and belt pulley 61. The plate 18 is pivotally mounted upon the housing 9 so that by means of a rack- and-pinion gear 19, 23 the wheel may be tilted into an horizontal position, thereby rendering it inoperative. The depth of immersion of the buckets 43 may be individually varied by operating windlasses 50, cables 47 passing from the buckets 43 to pulleys 46 carried by a revoluble collar 35, and thence to the windlasses. Adjustable tie-rods may take the place of cables and windlasses. Spacing-pieces 45, Fig. 2, extend between buckets, and are attached at one end only to the back of an adjacent bucket.
