Abstract
13,677. Wheatley, F. Sept. 25. Fixed-abutment type; working-fluid supply; cooling parts. - In an internal-combustion engine in which working chambers are formed between cam-surfaces on the ends of the piston and the cylinder and are contracted and expanded as the piston rotates and axially reciprocates with the cam-surfaces in contact, the piston is annular in shape, and the working fluid is admitted to the chambers through ports in inner cylindrical pieces D and ports in the piston, and is exhausted through ports in the cylinder A. In the example shown, two pistons E work in one common casing, which is divided into two by a partition A<2> having cam-surfaces at both sides. The pistons are secured rigidly by webs E<1> to a sleeve F splined to the shaft G. The pistons are cooled by water circulating within the hollows of the pistons by way of ports a. The cam-surfaces are recessed at O to provide initial working chambers the general direction of which is in the direction of the rotation of the piston.
